Appomattox
On march 1864 lincoln found someone to lead the union army. This was Ulysses S. Grant who on May 1864 with 100,000 of his men invaded virginia with plans to take richmond. Lees forces of 60,000 met grant at a thick forest called wilderness in two days grant lost 18,000.From there grant followed lee to cold harbor virginia where Grant lost 7,000 more men in 15 minutes. Grant was able to reinforce his army Lee could not.But the conflict lasted nine more months until on April 3, 1865 grants army took richmond and surrounded Lees army. Lee came to william mcleans house in the village of Appomattox courthouse there he surrendered his army over to grant
